Vitters to build a classic sloop to a Dykstra design
Dutch shipyard Vitters has signed a contract to construct a custom 53-metre sailing yacht, currently referred to as Project SY 07.
Renowned naval architect Gerard Dykstra—whose portfolio ranges from ultra-modern megayachts to replicas of the noble J Class—has a particular passion for creating classic sailing vessels. This 53-metre project has been commissioned by an experienced yachtsman seeking a dependable vessel equally suited to family circumnavigations and competitive regatta participation. The studio’s proposal for a sloop inspired by the 'Golden Age' of sail was met with enthusiasm, and the design phase is now underway. Interiors are being developed by Vripack design studio. The keel laying at Vitters is scheduled for January 2027, with delivery of SY07 expected in February 2029.
Preliminary renderings show a 53-metre hull (48 metres on the waterline) with a beam of 9.42 metres, featuring a straight stem, long bowsprit, elegant counter stern, and rectangular wooden deckhouses. The design team is focusing on optimising hull hydrodynamics and carefully balancing weight distribution to ensure strong performance across all wind conditions. Though the yacht’s architecture and engineering reflect a retro aesthetic, they incorporate modern technology—for instance, the 62-metre mast (designed to Panamax dimensions) and a contemporary boom will be built from composite materials, enabling SY 07 to compete effectively with racing yachts.
Sail area totals 1,200 square metres. A telescopic keel will allow draft adjustment from 4.5 to 6.9 metres, ensuring both upwind efficiency and access to shallow anchorages and marinas.
With an internal volume of 253 GT, the yacht will accommodate guests in four luxurious suites and provide crew quarters for up to seven. The interior will reflect the traditional style of 1920s–1930s classic sailing vessels, featuring extensive use of varnished wood, brass detailing, natural textiles, and leather. A signature element will be a gentleman’s bar located in the main saloon.
The yacht will be built to Lloyd's classification, with technical supervision provided by Van Ineveld & Co.
