The legendary founder of Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts, Frans Heesen, passed away yesterday. One of the patriarchs of the Dutch yachting industry passed away surrounded by his family at his home in Oss. Frans Heesen is survived by his wife, Petra, children, and grandchildren.

Frans Heesen founded Heesen Yachts in 1978 and remained at the helm for 35 years. His visionary leadership, courage, and exceptional ability to identify and nurture talent have been fundamental to Heesen Yachts’ success and growth.  With his characteristic Dutch boldness, Frans took daring and sometimes audacious steps that shaped the future of the shipyard. One such decision was the construction of the groundbreaking yacht Octopussy (1988), which became the fastest superyacht in the world. Frans himself called this project the biggest challenge in his career. Despite the enormous risks involved, including the potential bankruptcy of the shipyard, Heesen's unwavering faith and determination not only ensured the triumph of Octopussy but also propelled Heesen Yachts to global acclaim.

Frans dedicated his entire life to the shipyard, fostering an environment that felt more like a family than a business. Even after the company was sold, the family atmosphere he cultivated remained strong. Today, this sense of family and the values he instilled continue to define Heesen. Frans’ contributions have left an indelible mark on the yachting industry and everyone who had the honour of working with him.

We extend our deepest condolences to Frans’ family, friends, and everybody at Heesen Yachts during this time of loss.
