The famous adventurer Fedor Konyukhov has set yet another record. On the night of February 10-11, his rowing boat AKROS crossed the 20th meridian east (Cape Agulhas, South Africa) and entered the Indian Ocean, making him the first person in history to row across the South Atlantic. The news was announced on the official Telegram channel of Konyukhov's expedition headquarters.
The journey from the shores of South America to Cape Agulhas took the adventurer 68 days. Konyukhov’s route passed through the "Furious Fifties" and "Roaring Forties," some of the planet's most dangerous and stormy latitudes. These regions are notorious for their relentless winds and towering waves. The presence of drift ice, particularly from May to October, adds another layer of danger, while the remoteness of the area from inhabited regions makes search and rescue operations extremely challenging. It’s a formidable test for even large vessels, let alone a small rowing boat navigated solo.
However, Konyukhov is no stranger to such challenges. Between December 2018 and May 2019, he completed the first-ever rowing journey across the South Pacific Ocean aboard AKROS, travelling from Dunedin, New Zealand, to Cape Horn, Chile. This marked the first stage of his solo round-the-world rowing expedition. Previously, he had already rowed across both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Konyukhov is now in the second stage of his expedition, during which he aims to reach Cape Leeuwin on the western coast of Australia. He still has 4,200 nautical miles to go.
The AKROS, Konyukhov’s vessel, was designed by British naval architect Phil Morrison, who also created Konyukhov’s previous boats, URALAZ and TURGOYAK. The 9-meter boat is made of composite materials and features a "crash box" in the bow, divided into two watertight compartments with space for 200 days' worth of supplies and equipment. The cockpit has been minimised to reduce the risk of the rower being swept overboard by large waves. The stern section includes three watertight bulkheads, with a navigation cabin on the starboard side, a galley on the port side, and a separate sleeping compartment. The steering mechanism is also housed in a waterproof compartment. The boat is equipped with high-efficiency solar panels that power its navigation and communication systems.
Fedor Konyukhov has completed a total of five circumnavigations. In 2016, he set two world records by flying around the globe in a hot air balloon on his first attempt. He has also climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents and reached both the North and South Poles solo. In total, Konyukhov holds 27 world records, including five Guinness World Records.
