Project Zero: The Fossil-Fuel-Free Superyacht emerges from shed

Project Zero is the world's first sailing yacht designed to operate entirely without fossil fuels. The 69 m vessel, soon to be transferred by barge from Zwartsluis to Harlingen for her official launch, is the culmination of a seven-year collaboration between Vitters, Vripack, and Dykstra Naval Architects.

"After seven years of dedication, passion, and engineering excellence from the project's core partners... we are one step closer to realizing a yacht that operates entirely on harvested renewable energy," the teams said in a joint statement.

Project Zero harvests energy from three sources: wind, solar, and thermal. The propulsion system, refined with input from Emirates Team New Zealand, uses turbine propellers that generate hydroelectric power when sailing. Her biminis carry 100 sqm of photovoltaic thermal panels that produce both electricity and thermal energy for heating and cooling. A 700-volt DC grid manages it all from a dedicated mission control room.

The hull design, made with input from America's Cup engineers, delivers a 2.5 percent speed increase and eight percent more electric power generation than conventional designs. The vessel is capable of cruising for up to two weeks solely on renewable sources.

The owners' brief was clear: elegance, comfort, and independence. The main cockpit features modular furniture on castors that can convert from lounge seating to formal dining for 12 guests. The elimination of a full-beam engine room has allowed for a discreet crew passageway. Each of the four guest cabins draws inspiration from places significant to the owners.

Interestingly, all system data, technical insights, and key design specifications will be made freely available through FoundationZero.org, an open platform intended to share advancements with designers, engineers, and researchers worldwide.

The yacht's Panamax-height masts, built by CarboLink AG, will be stepped in the coming days. Following her barge transfer to Harlingen, Project Zero will complete her official launch into the water.
