With the arrival of this model, it became clear that Sportster is far more than a one-off project created for collectors and unveiled in 2024 to mark the brand’s 150th anniversary. It is also more than a market experiment aimed at testing demand through a bold exterior and a more flexible price point. Two bowriders — 25 and 28 feet in length — have formed the foundation of a fully fledged new lineup. One could even say more: these models define the future direction of Chris-Craft.

Which boatbuilder today isn’t searching for the golden key to a younger, more active audience? Almost everyone is thinking about how to make their boats appealing to those who seek variety and flexibility in life, vivid experiences and new horizons, rather than simply an escape from the bustle of a megacity. Chris-Craft takes a similar approach, enhancing a proven formula with its rich heritage and a discreet old-money aura. Much like Ralph Lauren’s fusion of jeans and polo shirts with classic New England style, the Sportster emerges as the Polo Ralph Lauren of boating.

The bowrider blends Chris-Craft’s timeless design language with a modern, contemporary style. As the 28-foot model is longer than its predecessor, its hull proportions look more familiar to loyal fans of the brand than those of the 25-footer. This is hardly surprising, since the shipyard itself openly acknowledges that the first Sportster was derived from one of its most renowned bowrider lines — the Launch GT.

Despite their distinctive character and clear individuality, the boats from this American builder are perfectly adapted to a wide range of conditions. Beauty and the high quality of finish never come at the expense of practicality and functionality. They are equally comfortable and effective on the sea, on lakes, and on reservoirs. The 2018 Launch 28 GT is an excellent example of a truly versatile boat. The fact that it, together with the Sportster 25, served as the starting point for the Sportster 28 project only works in the newcomer’s favor.

If the Sportster 25 was a proof of concept, the second model is the arena where designers and engineers were able to showcase their ideas in full. And indeed, the additional five feet of length have made the boat both more spacious and more comfortable.

The swim platform is equipped with a wide submersible step for easy access to the water. A generous sunbed with a height-adjustable headrest is installed on the transom. Storage compartments are located beneath the foot cushions and under the right armrest, providing space for water skis or wakeboards, sports gear, as well as drinks and snacks.

Access to the cockpit is via the starboard side, descending three steps. A nice touch. High freeboards offer reliable protection from spray, enhanced safety for children and pets, and allow for higher, more comfortable backrests on sofas and seats.

In the cockpit, the transom sunbed is complemented by an L-shaped sofa. Its seat bases lift up to reveal storage compartments beneath. Along the starboard side, behind the helm seat, there is a wide aft-facing seat. A teak table is available as an option.

The main console is divided by a central passage leading to the bow area. On the port side is the entrance to the head, recessed deeply enough to accommodate a large adult comfortably. Inside, there is a toilet and a sink. The countertop is made of Corian, while the walls are finished in a milky white tone that matches the cockpit. LED lighting diffuses a soft yet sufficiently bright illumination.

The starboard side of the main console houses the helm station with two 9-inch Garmin touchscreens. In addition to the primary display on the dashboard, the boat can be equipped with the VesselView system, which shows comprehensive data on engine performance, fuel tanks, and other onboard systems. Beneath the screens, set into a teak panel, is a neat and stylish block of illuminated analog push-button switches. The three-spoke steering wheel is wrapped in leather and delivers precise handling along with a pleasing tactile feel. The curved windshield, as on the Sportster 25, extends to midship. Exit to the bow area is via the opening central windshield section.

Forward, two deep lounges converge toward the bow. Their backrests are lifted by gas struts, revealing storage spaces and cup holders inside. It is convenient to stow personal items while seated along the sides.

The bowrider is equipped with a sporty arch that can be height-adjusted at the push of a button. A hardtop or a bimini can be ordered as an option.

For the Sportster 28, a premium JL Audio sound system is available, featuring six speakers with elegant stainless-steel grilles and a 10-inch subwoofer, delivering impressive sound quality.

As standard, the swim platform, the triangular cover of the bow anchor locker, and the panel beneath the captain’s feet are finished with a synthetic teak-style covering. While its high quality is out of question, all these elements can be ordered in natural wood instead. This package is known as the Heritage Trim Edition. The most luxurious Heritage Edition goes even further, with the entire deck finished in teak.

The boat comes equipped with an inboard V8 or V10 Mercury MerCruiser or Volvo Penta engine producing up to 430 hp, or alternatively with a single Mercury Verado V10 outboard rated at 350 or 400 hp. Volvo Penta is the preferred choice if you plan to order the surf package.

In this set-up, the boat benefits from an outstanding set of additional features thanks to the Volvo Penta Forward Drive system. These include a forward-facing Duoprop twin-prop drive, an electronically controlled ballast system, and a rigid sport arch designed for tow rope attachment.

Created for those who appreciate both elegance and performance, the Sportster 28 embodies refined luxury on the water. Meticulous craftsmanship, advanced engineering solutions, and remarkable versatility turn every outing into an engaging and confident journey — stylish, dynamic, and safe.
