Sea Ray SDX 270: Declaration of pleasure
In 2026, Sea Ray is sailing on three main pillars: SPX, SDX, and SLX. These acronyms can easily leave the uninitiated scratching their heads—it's not immediately obvious how to tell all these "X" models apart, especially without seeing the boat in person. In reality, it's fairly straightforward: SPX is the entry point into the Sea Ray world, SLX represents the most fully loaded models, and SDX sits right in the golden middle.
Whichever Sea Ray you choose, one thing is guaranteed: vivid emotions and pure enjoyment out on the water. After all, a boat is first and foremost a boat—the extras come second. The real question is what suits your specific needs: the right size, the power you require, and the level of equipment you want. The Sea Ray lineup allows owners to grow with their experience, expanding capabilities and family size, moving up to increasingly larger and better-appointed vessels, all the way to the flagship models that border on motor yachts.
The SDX 270 bowrider can be considered one of the brand's anchor models. It's a spacious, well-equipped 8.5-meter boat that can accommodate up to 12 people. The boat is available with either sterndrive or outboard engines, as well as in a Surf version featuring a ballast system, transom trim tabs for wave generation, and a forward-facing propeller shaft. The theater begins with the coat check, and a boat begins with its swim platform. The Sea Ray SDX 270 features a standout attribute here: a wide fold-out swim step. It deploys manually and provides easy access in and out of the water. To the right of the step, another hatch opens to reveal a telescoping ladder. The aft seat backrest transforms into a sun lounger—lift and fold it over, and the seat becomes a spacious sunbathing area comfortable enough for two adults, with room for a third to sit alongside. On the port side near the lounger, there's a Fusion Audio system control panel and USB and USB-C ports, as well as a freshwater shower. Another handy feature is a ventilated storage compartment for wet gear and mooring lines.
The cockpit has been designed with great attention to detail, flexibility, and functionality. The backrests of the sofas on both the port and starboard sides can be slid forward to create more space for socializing and relaxing. Under the sofas and below deck, there are spacious lockers for gear and sports equipment, such as water skis and wakeboards. Near the seats, you'll find charging ports, cup holders, and small-item pockets. There's also a chilled cooler box for drinks. It's worth noting that the table, cup holders, charging ports, and cooler box are also present in the fore cockpit—so when you're relaxing up front, you won't have to constantly get up and head aft for another drink or to adjust the music volume. The bow cockpit can also be fitted with a filler cushion between the seats, creating a playpen for children or a large sunbathing area. The deck flooring can be finished in either vinyl or SeaDek material, both available in two color options.
The cockpit can be fitted with either a Bimini top or an optional electro-hydraulic tower (the Surf version includes it as standard equipment). For easy transport or passing under low bridges, the tower can be folded down. It can also be equipped with board racks, additional audio speakers, and both aft and bow sunshades.
At the helm, you'll find two multifunction Simrad displays. They can be customized in various ways—for example, one can show the digital MerCruiser instrument panel while the other displays the chart plotter. This way, you always have both navigation data and engine information at your fingertips. Alongside the touchscreens, there are analog buttons for switching lights and other functions on and off. The boat is equipped with a DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift) electronic control—essentially, no mechanical cables run to the lever; everything is controlled electronically, "by wire." This eliminates mechanical wear and ensures smooth, jam-free lever operation throughout the boat's lifetime, whereas analog controls often require cable replacement within three to four years. The boat can also be equipped with an Active Trim automatic trim system. If you want to impress your guests with your skills, you can manually adjust the trim, but you can also leave it to the automation—the system will choose the optimal settings based on the conditions.
As we all know, not every boat is well-suited for outings with children. If you're worried that your child might get tired, seasick, or sunburned, or that you'll need to make an emergency stop to find a restroom, the Sea Ray 270 SDX puts those concerns to rest. Immediately aft of the helm station on the starboard side is a changing cabin that also serves as a head (a toilet with a macerator can be installed on board) or a resting area (cushions can be fitted here to create a sleeping berth). The ceiling height is sufficient for both children and adults to use the cabin comfortably.
On the port side of the console, there's a storage compartment for the tables. It also leaves plenty of room for other items, such as life jackets and beach towels.
In front of the forward passenger seat, you'll find a Fusion Audio system control panel. There's also a lockable glovebox nearby. A subwoofer under the pilot's seat and three pairs of speakers deliver clear, full-bodied sound. Combined with RGB lighting in the cockpit and under the hull, the boat transforms into a veritable floating nightclub.
At the bow, next to the anchor windlass, there's another telescoping ladder—a useful feature that allows boarding and disembarking from both the stern and the bow. The bow can also be equipped with a shower (part of the Water System Bundle package, along with the stern shower). Neither the anchor nor the windlass gets in the way of passengers—the bow ends in a convenient flat platform where you can dive into the water or stand with a fishing rod without disturbing other guests in the cockpit.
In its standard sterndrive configuration, the boat is powered by a Mercury® MerCruiser® 6.2L MPI ECT engine producing 300 hp, paired with a Bravo Three® drive. Engines of 430 hp and 350 hp are also available. The outboard version is offered in 300 hp or 400 hp variants.
