Standard of quality
It is no secret that yacht and boat design prioritizes the intelligent organization of open spaces. Most owners favor sunny days for time on the water, and by that logic, the capacity, flexible layout, and well-appointed cockpit are more critical than expansive cabins. However, any seasoned yachtsman or powerboater knows that weather on the water can shift rapidly, and the availability of comfortable enclosed space aboard fundamentally transforms the experience of cruising, whether at sea or on inland waters. Of course, many boats feature folding tops or tent canopies, but by the time you retrieve and deploy that gear, you may well be soaked through. Even a bimini top can be tricky to set up on the first try, let alone a full-sized tent. The Sundancer 320 Coupe was created for those who refuse to be caught off guard by the elements—a boat with a semi-enclosed helm cabin and full-size side and forward windows.
The Sea Ray Sundancer 320 has been produced in various configurations for over fifteen years—ample time to perfect its ergonomics and create a vessel that marries a high level of comfort with versatility. The Sundancer 320 Coupe makes the impression of a genuine mini-yacht rather than merely a day cruiser. In fact, it combines at least three boat genres—a cabin cruiser, a bowrider, and a sedan-style cruiser. Add to that a passenger capacity of 2+2 (beyond the primary double-berth cabin, there are two additional full sleeping accommodations) and twin engines—and what is that if not a yacht?
The Sundancer 320 Coupe is available with both inboard and outboard engines. The outboard version appeals to those seeking maximum top speed—40 knots or even slightly more. The inboard configuration, depending on the chosen powerplant—gasoline or diesel—delivers 30 or 35 knots. Both versions, whether with inboards or outboards, can be equipped with the Axius joystick control system, enhanced with Skyhook dynamic positioning. A single touch, and the vessel holds its position without dropping anchor. Also available is the Dynamic Running Surface auto-trim system, which ensures a smoother and more level ride.
The outboard-engine version features a spacious lazarette aft. The inboard version, by contrast, offers a convertible sun lounger. Its backrest functions as a pivoting console; by adjusting its position, you can transform the area into either a full sunbathing pad or a stern settee combined with a cockpit sofa. Even with outboards, the stern retains a sufficiently wide swim platform for easy movement. In the inboard configuration, the swim platform can be further outfitted with a servo-assisted underwater step for convenient water entry. Additionally, a pull-out swim ladder is provided on the starboard side of the platform, ensuring a graceful and effortless reboarding experience.
An important detail—unobtrusive at first glance but one for which you will repeatedly thank Sea Ray's designers—is the placement of the main systems switch panel in the stern lazarette, rather than hidden deep within the boat. This is the first thing you pass when boarding and the last when leaving: step aboard, switch on; step off, switch off.
Unlike many boats over 10 meters in length, there is no external side walkway here, not even a narrow one. This design choice maximizes the use of the full beam, which reaches 3.23 meters. Inside, there is no sense of confinement whatsoever, and the oversized side windows of the helm cabin play a decisive role in this: they flood the salon with natural light and blur the boundary between "inside" and "outside." For ventilation, you can open not only the forward walkway but also the triangular side vent windows, which may evoke fond memories of classic sedans for older enthusiasts.
The main cockpit can comfortably accommodate a group of 10 to 12 people. The backrest of the port-side sun lounger is reversible, allowing seating either facing forward or in a semi-reclining position with legs extended aft. Ample stowage compartments are provided beneath all settees. The hinged cushions are fitted with pneumatic struts, so you need not worry about pinched fingers when opening or closing the lockers.
A triangular dining table is located aft to port. Its shape is no accident—it allows unobstructed passage through the cockpit, enabling guests to move past without knocking over glasses. To starboard, a galley module features a cooktop, sink, refrigerator, and storage compartments. A grill can also be installed as an option.
The helm station is highly ergonomic. Visibility is outstanding, arguably even better than in the standard version with a half-height windshield, as there is no frame at eye level. When the bolster of the port passenger seat is raised, it serves as a comfortable wide armrest for the helmsman, allowing a relaxed, casual driving posture. The steering wheel is adjustable for tilt. A footrest provides a stable stance, letting you brace firmly against the seat when operating at high speed or in choppy conditions.
Most of the cockpit is sheltered by a hardtop with a large opening sunroof. An optional SureShade retractable awning can be installed, extending shade nearly to the swim platform.
In traditional cabin cruisers, access to the foredeck is typically through a folding section of the windshield and a ladder combined with the forward cabin door. A sunpad is often located there, but using it while underway can be risky. The Sundancer 320 Coupe takes a different approach: the bow area is designed in a bowrider style, with three spacious loungers in a recessed well and convenient port-side access. Here you can relax and enjoy the changing views while under way. The loungers are equipped with headrests, armrests, adjustable leg supports, and cup holders, while tall guardrails ensure safety even at speed. A table can also be installed in this area. You may find it hard to leave this spot.
The upholstery of the main and forward cockpits is marine-grade vinyl in shades of sand, ivory, dark gray stone, and white. The deck can be finished in natural teak, SeaDeck material, or covered with a woven synthetic matting—individual sections can be easily unfastened for cleaning or replacement. For the interior accommodations, several wood finish options are available, in either matte or gloss.
Despite the recessed forward lounging area, the engineers have managed to maintain adequate headroom in the forward cabin (190 cm at its highest point). The dining area there conventionally converts into a V-shaped double berth. Aft, behind the companionway stairs, is an additional space (a second "cabin") with two berths that can be arranged separately or combined into a single bed. If you are cruising as a couple, you need not even stow the forward table to sleep—a full studio layout is at your disposal. Of particular note is the fully enclosed head with a porthole, featuring an electric-flush toilet with macerator, vanity with sink and faucet, and a shower.
Sea Ray's developers chose not to install a full galley in the cabin to avoid cooking odors in the enclosed space. However, there is a full-size refrigerator with freezer compartment, a deep niche for a coffee machine, and a microwave oven. The lockers are fitted with proprietary magnetic-latch holders for plates, glasses, and other tableware. An air-conditioning and heating system can be installed either in the cabin alone or in both the cabin and the cockpit.
Buyers of the Sundancer 320 Coupe have access to a wide range of propulsion packages with total output from 600 to 800 hp, enabling speeds from 30 to over 40 knots. The extensive list of available equipment includes Simrad 9- or 12-inch touchscreen instrument displays, Simrad radar and VHF radio, a premium stereo system, an automatic fire-suppression system in the engine compartment, a cruising tent canopy, a panoramic sliding sunroof, a Webasto independent heater, an electric windlass, and an integrated transom shower. LED cockpit lighting creates a special ambiance in the evening hours, and this can be complemented with bright underwater lighting on the swim platform.
Sea Ray was a pioneer in the use of fiberglass in boat construction and continues to set industry standards. The QUIET RIDE™ technology reduces onboard noise levels through a uniquely shaped hull, strategically distributed sound insulation, and specialized trim materials that absorb vibration and noise. The stern incorporates Tuned Transom® technology from Omni Products, which minimizes vibration from the engine and drive unit. The deck is constructed of reinforced fiberglass with vibration-damping resin. In addition, the enclosed helm cabin itself insulates a significant portion of wind noise while under way. Thanks to these solutions, conversation aboard the Coupe can be conducted at normal speaking volume even at full speed.
A mini-yacht for maximum enjoyment—that is perhaps the best way to encapsulate the ethos of the Sea Ray Sundancer 320 Coupe. Close your eyes and picture it: you are already on board. The breeze gently stirs the edge of the awning, ice clinks in your glass, and ahead lies nothing but the horizon. This is your Sundancer.
