The letters XO are instantly recognisable to connoisseurs of fine spirits, as they signify 'eXtra Old' cognac, renowned for its rich aroma and bold flavour. For many, these letters evoke sophistication and quality. Interestingly, XO also stands for 'Executive Officer' on navy ships, referring to the second-highest-ranking officer onboard. Such associations may have crossed the minds of the founders of the Finnish cabin boat brand XO. However, the name's origin is much simpler: it stands for 'CrossOver'.

The Marine Off-Roader: XO DFNDR 9

The model we’re focusing on today is the DFNDR 9, a clear nod to the legendary Land Rover Defender, one of the most iconic off-road vehicles of all time. In fact, XO's lineup also includes the DSCVR series, a namesake of the equally famous Land Rover Discovery. So, if you’re looking for a cabin boat with the rugged appeal of a classic 4x4, XO is the brand for you.

The XO DFNDR 9 is an 8.7-metre versatile cabin cruiser designed for leisure, expeditions, and watersports. It comfortably sleeps two, and with optional side wheelhouse doors and cockpit covers, it transforms into an all-weather, multipurpose vessel.

This is also the first XO model with a centre-console layout, a feature that anglers will appreciate. While it makes the wheelhouse feel a bit narrow, the design allows for easy movement around the deck, making it ideal for reeling in your next big catch.

Practical and Functional Design

The DFNDR 9 features an aluminium hull with a rubber protective belt all around, perfect for docking alongside other boats or during locking. However, the belt sits relatively high, so fenders are still essential when mooring at standard docks. Additional protection is provided at the stern, along with a separate bumper for the bow.

The deck is covered with a practical, non-slip synthetic material that’s easy to clean. Robust matte-finished railings add to the boat's rugged aesthetic while requiring minimal maintenance compared to the glossy stainless steel railings commonly found on other boats. The overall design is highly functional, with clear nods to off-road vehicles built for serious terrain.

Flexible and Comfortable Layout

The rear seating area is highly versatile, with a sofa and table that can be transformed as needed. The table doubles in size when unfolded, and the backrest of the wheelhouse sofa can align with the rear sofa to create a spacious sunbed. Additionally, the wheelhouse sofa’s backrest can be flipped forward, allowing passengers to face the table. Sliding the wheelhouse side doors all the way back shields those seated at the table from the wind — a simple yet practical touch. Ample storage compartments for fenders and mooring lines are built into the hull on both sides.

The wheelhouse, with its panoramic windows, accommodates up to four passengers. While the rear sofa can technically fit three, this may feel tight if the passengers are bundled up in heavy fishing gear. The front seats feature flip-up bolsters and shock-absorbing bases, providing comfort at high speeds and in rough waters. The suspension can even be adjusted to suit the weight of the passenger using a convenient dial.

Thanks to the expansive windows and generous headroom, the cabin feels less like a traditional boat and more like a futuristic transport pod or a gondola at a luxury ski resort. The roof can be equipped with a sliding sunroof and railings for additional gear or luggage during long trips. There’s also an option to install a tow bar for watersports like wakeboarding or towing inflatables. For added convenience, the radar mast with spotlight can be folded down to navigate under low bridges or reduce the boat’s height for transport.

The two-berth cabin is equipped with a full bathroom, complete with a sink, toilet, and shower. A large hatch in the cabin allows direct access to the bow deck. The DFNDR 9 also comes with a heater, making it suitable for use in cold climates.

Reliability and Versatility

Powered by dual Mercury 225 V6 outboard engines, the DFNDR 9 can reach speeds well over 45 knots. Its durable aluminium hull, deep-V design, and Lenco Marine trim tabs make it a true marine off-roader, capable of handling both calm waters and choppy seas. Whether exploring remote shores, embarking on long river expeditions, fishing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, or towing inflatables, this high-speed, practical boat is ready for any adventure. It can even serve as a tender for a larger yacht.

The aluminium hull not only ensures durability but also retains its aesthetic appeal longer than fibreglass boats, making it a more valuable investment on the second-hand market. Unlike fibreglass, aluminium is less prone to issues like osmosis and is easier and cheaper to repair. However, any repairs should be entrusted to experienced marine specialists rather than automotive body shops, which may lack the expertise required for boats.

Key Features of the XO DFNDR 9

  • Two-person cabin with a bathroom
  • Front seats with adjustable suspension
  • Glass-enclosed cabin
  • Transformable dining area at the stern
  • Built-in heater
  • Walkaround layout ideal for fishing
