The role of personality

On the main staircase of Gabe Newell's new Oceanco yacht Leviathan, a glass panel is installed, engraved with the names of everyone who contributed their hands, minds, and hearts to its creation. Two thousand names are etched into the glass—two thousand lives intertwined through the web of blueprints, welds on the hull, and design visions. This panel is a testament to the fact that behind every masterpiece lies not a faceless conveyor belt but the meticulous work of a team where each individual is a vital cog in a complex machine. Each person left a part of themselves in this floating palace, and now, looking at the result, one can see not only the fruit of engineering brilliance but also a reflection of human ambition and passion.

At the recent boat shows in Cannes and Monaco, the influx of new names, brands, and designers was impossible to miss. Our era offers the unique advantage of allowing talented and ambitious individuals to start from scratch and quickly catch up to—or even surpass—the competition. People unfamiliar with the yachting industry are often surprised to learn just how many major projects are being built in Turkey or how shipyards are emerging in the United Arab Emirates. Realistically, not all young ventures will prove sustainable or celebrate 150 or 200 years like some of the world’s most renowned shipyards. However, the sheer enthusiasm and the desire to make a mark (and earn a name) deserve nothing but respect.

Yachting reveals the true essence of a person—both on the open sea and in the waves of business. Some demonstrate leadership, skilfully managing their team and making critical decisions, while others uncover a talent for diplomacy, building and maintaining relationships.

Resilience in the face of nature’s elements becomes an invaluable asset, helping not only to navigate the uncompromising seas but also to achieve success in life. After all, managing a yacht is a metaphor for managing one’s life. It requires the ability to set goals, plan actions, and take responsibility without fear.

Who knows? Perhaps the yachting industry is currently at a turning point where projects and ideas that once seemed like science fiction will soon become reality. In any case, we’ll be the first to tell you about it.
